We’ve been busy little devils; we just finalized our 2012 jersey design and opened the doors to pre-orders. We’ll close pre-orders on June 1, so don’t wait too long (electronic operators are standing by).

We will offer a limited number of jerseys for sale on the day of the ride, but make no guarantees.

Here’s The Jersey

2012 Shasta Summit Century Jersey

Here’s How To Order

Jerseys are $75. To order, click here

Make sure you get the right size; once you’ve clicked the “order” button, you (and us) are committed. Changing your order is a royal pain in the butt.

Some Notes

We’re switching jersey suppliers to Voler, who make their jerseys right here in the state of California

Because there is little difference between the two, we’re selling only club cut jerseys

If there is any doubt, order the next larger size. Last year we traded a bazillion jerseys back for the next larger size, and we’d like your help avoiding that this year

What Will Happen

When you order a jersey, we’ll charge you a $5 shipping charge

The jerseys will arrive just prior to the ride

If you pick up your jersey at the ride, we’ll give you back a crisp, shiny $5 bill

If you don’t pick it up, we’ll mail it to you after the ride

Sound simple? That’s because it is.

Higher Fees

Our food costs doubled from 2010 to 2011, and despite a 30 rider increase (exactly the growth rate we wanted), we ended up with $5,000 less to grant to our local youth sports organizations.

Accordingly, we hiked our prices — which are still cheaper than the vast majority of similar rides out there.

We hope you understand.

Active.com Registration

Last year we heard some complaints about Active.com’s Advantage program and the magazine subscription sales efforts, and we’ve asked Active to remove those this year.

We’re open to looking at other online registration services; if you prefer another online registration system, drop us an email and let us know.

We’ve got more news to come, but we’d delayed registration long enough, and wanted to get it fired up.

See you in August!

Freelance writer Mike McQuaid posted a lengthy article about his 2011 Mt. Shasta Summit Century experience, which included this passage:

All this said, this ride and routes are highly HIGHLY recommended. Organization and food are tops. The course is well marked and the towns—Weed, Edgewood and Mount Shasta—are small and traffic doesn’t seem to be an issue.

If you want one participant’s experience spelled out, McQuaid’s a good writer and the article is worth a visit.

You’ll find other riders talking about the 2011 ride in this post — and don’t forget to look in the comments section under the posts, where some lengthy comments spell out their experience, like this:

I don’t think the Shasta Summit Century gets enough credit for what a difficult, beautiful, well-run event it is. Fabulous roads. Un-crowded. Almost no traffic. Exceptional staffing, signage, marking, food. Riders don’t get stickers for completing anything. We just get the views and the back-slaps. The volunteers are genuinely in awe when you get it done, but for the most part it isn’t obvious how hard the ride is until you start to turn the pedals. If I had to choose one favorite thing from the ride (hard to do!) it would be the roads – the generally great pavement, the beauty and the almost ZERO traffic the entire day. Where there was any traffic expected, there were relevant signs on the road both for the cars and the cyclists. The markings on the road were the best I’ve ever seen. Not in the margin. Not little stickers. But HUGE 4’ long arrows right in the middle of the road! And if that weren’t enough, the cue sheet was PERFECT, even though it wasn’t needed because of the great markings!

See you in August!

We’ve received a lot of wonderful comments from this year’s riders, and wanted to highlight a couple of blog posts by riders (with pictures).

First, here’s a lengthy, fun post on the Trail Runner’s blog (excerpt below):

Chris Devine (aka, “Devo”) was our local tour guide, a resident of nearby Chico, CA, who had just finished a long ride in nearby Lassen Park. He pointed out to us that most of the climbs would be like the first one – tall (3600′ of climbing) but not a high grade, with 8 miles to get there. It was a comfortable pace, just enough to keep a breeze going, instead of an out-of-the-saddle grunt fest.

We met some characters at the top of the first climb, none more so than “Two Hats”, a through-hiker from Australia who had started up the Pacific Coast Trail in Mexico 90 days earlier, on his way to Canada. Lets just say he was pretty stoked to see a bunch of people AND a bunch of fresh cut watermelon.

The descent was smooth and easy to navigate thanks to an insanely well marked course. They even highlighted divots in the road with neon marker so you could spot them on descents! It provided a nice level of comfort for these 35-45 mph plunges. I bet the pros on the TdF would go for that.

Then writer Mike McQuaid posted a heap of nice pictures taken during his Super Century Ride, and also mentioned his pre-ride training in this post).

(Here’s a blog post from 2010 we missed the first time around).

It’s the day after the 2011 Shasta Summit Century, and like most of the participants, the organizers are all feeling a little stiffer than usual.

Despite one scary crash (she’s going to be OK), there’s a lot to celebrate:

Another year of striking weather

Record ridership (700 on the nose)

Record numbers of riders to all our summits (yes, we count)

Record amounts of fun among our riders, organizers and volunteers!

In the little town of Mt. Shasta, 700 riders — 80% of which live more than two hours away — amount to a sizable chunk of humanity.

In fact, the Mt. Shasta Summit Century has become Mt. Shasta’s second largest weekend event (after our huge Fourth of July run), and we thank each and every rider who makes the trip to our somewhat remote corner of the planet.

The economy has landed hard on our already-economically challenged rural county, and in several cases, the grants provided to local youth sports programs (our emphasis is on aerobic “lifetime” sports) are all that stand between some of these highly successful sporting programs (high school track, cross-country, nordic xc-skiing and others) and, well… no program at all.

When I’m less sleepy, I’ll put together a by-the-numbers email/post.

Until then, we’ll see you next year (Sunday, August 5, 2012).

Online registration for the 2011 Mt. Shasta Summit Century closes at midnight, Wednesday August 3 (tomorrow as this is sent).

Registration numbers are just a bit higher than last year’s, so we anticipate offering onsite registration the day before — and the morning of — the ride.

See you here on August 7!

Onsite Registration and Check-In

Summit Century On-Site Registration
Saturday, August 6, 2010 (at City Park start/finish; 5:00-8:00 PM)
Sunday, August 1, 2010 (starting 5:00 AM)

Ride Start Times (August 7)
Super Century: 5:30-6:30 AM
Summit Century: 6:30-7:30 AM
Metric Century: 7:00-8:00 AM
Half Metric: 8:30-9:30 AM

Typical Weather Warning

These are the mountains and the weather changes on an hourly basis. Even on warm days, it’s cold in the mornings, so bring your vests/arm warmers/knee warmers, and take advantage of the Chico Bag we give you at registration; write your name on it in marker and use it as a drop bag at the first couple rest stops.

In prior years we’ve had everything from thunderstorms, freezing rains and perfectly warm days, so even if it’s sunny where you are, it’s not the same up here…

Once again, the local cycling club (Shasta Pedali) will run their annual Mt. Shasta hill climb time trial on Saturday morning (the day before our Sunday, August 7 event).

It’s a 14 mile timed event up Mt. Shasta (police escort through town!), and while some very fast riders attend, it’s also a fun ride for a lot of people.

Want to learn more? Click here for details.

It’s a great way to see the last climb of the Super Century, loosen up your legs, and add a little extra pain and suffering to your weekend.

It’s a timed event, but it’s not limited to the monster climbers. Have fun!

Because this is the first year we’re offering it, you might have to ask for it when you’re moving through the food line; we want to make sure we’ve got enough to make it all the way through the day.

See you in August,
